Hel-X 13 Floating Bio Media For Moving Bed Filters- 20 Litres
Hel-x 13 is a small (13 mm) plastic cylindrical biological filter media similar to K1 Kaldnes filter media. This filter media has a very surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and break down toxic Ammonia into less harmful Nitrates and finally into Nitrates.
This unique media has helical geometry which offers low flow resistance for efficient movement in a moving bed filter, while providing maximum protected surface area for beneficial bacteria to maintain a stable bio film. The bacteria and micro organisms which make up the bio film biologically break down food and fish waste within the filter system, resulting in healthy water for your fish.
This 20 Litre bag of Oase Hel-X 13 biological filter media has the capacity to biologically break down 136g of food per day.
How it Works In a Moving Bed Filter
Hel-x 13 is engineered to be slightly positively buoyant so that it is just buoyant enough to float. This allows it to be easily circulated throughout the filter chamber with small amount of water flow. This water flow is typically created with an air pump and air stones /air diffuser placed at the bottom of the filter chamber. Because the Hel-x media is in constant motion, it ensures the media is always supplied with oxygenated water and nutrients to break down.
The protected surface area on the inside of the Hel-x allows the filter to mature quickly and maintain maximum bacteria count to complete the nitrification process. Hel-x 13 bio media provides a huge protected surface area for the bacteria to colonise, more than other types of filter media. It is this process which removes harmful ammonia and nitrite from the water.
