Subsurface aeration is the process of introducing oxygen to the bottom of natural ponds or lakes with the use of compressed air bubbles that are forced through a diffuser. These rising bubbles of air create a strong convection current, pulling low oxygen water found at the bottom of ponds to the waters’ surface where it picks up oxygen. This oxygen rich water is then pulled back down to the bottom of the pond by the current. This process breaks up thermoclines, i.e. the stratification of water layers that develop in most ponds, evenly distributing oxygen throughout the water column. Oxygen rich water accelerates the decomposition of sludge and organic matter on the bottom and in the water column by beneficial aerobic bacteria.
