The wonderful arcade racing game Wreckfest is out on mobile platforms from an online game developer Friv2Online Games Studio, and we didn't miss the opportunity to steer the wrecks on the smartphone screen. We share our impressions in the review.
From its early access release on PC in 2014 to the present, Wreckfest has visited all relevant platforms, including PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch consoles. Now the game has also moved to mobile platforms: the HandyGames studio has completed a port for iOS and Android. And that's what I want to note, having rolled a dozen hours on the smartphone.
Wreckfest Mobile is beautiful but demanding. On an Android smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, the game delivers a stable 30 frames per second at maximum graphics settings, but if you increase the fps limit to 60 fps, the performance graph will not be perfectly smooth, and the smartphone will start to heat up.
The situation can be evened out using the screen scaling and dynamic resolution options, but in this case you will have to choose between a “soapy” picture and high fps. Moreover, the image “washes” quite strongly, turning what is happening on the screen into an unpleasant mess. When playing on a weak system, you will inevitably have to make compromises.
It's better to play with a gamepad. The game has a large number of control settings available: you can steer using the slider, arrows and tilt of the gadget, as well as fine-tune various parameters, such as dead zone and steering sensitivity, gas and brake. But… all this is not right: the touch controls are not precise and convenient enough to perfectly control the car. I never managed to get used to it - the car drove from side to side, and the races did not end with prizes.
Everything changed with the connection of the gamepad. Wreckfest Mobile is compatible with Bluetooth controllers and would happily pair with the GameSir X2 Bluetooth. With this device, driving became easy and pleasant, which immediately provided me with one victory after another in the races.
The content of the mobile version is identical to the content of the PC and console versions. On a smartphone, you get a full-fledged, uncut Wreckfest - with a long career, a large selection of cars, tuning and styling, and even multiplayer. Although there are problems with the latter: the servers are empty. Everything that is available in the "older" version of the game is also in the "younger", including paid DLC with cars and customization items. Unless there are no mods.
So if you fell in love with Wreckfest for those reckless races in which you can smash your car and your opponent's car into the trash, where after the race the track is littered with crumpled debris, and where crazy challenges like the school bus competition are thrown at you from time to time, the mobile port will not disappoint you. On the other hand, players who have completed the title on PC or console will not see anything new here.
If Wreckfest Mobile were a little better optimized, it could be called the best racing game on mobile devices. However, she is now experiencing problems with performance and picture quality even on powerful devices, so it is recommended to wait for patches or agree to lower graphic settings for the sake of a stable frame rate.
